Become enamored with the splendor of Paris in this heartwarming and delightful story about writing one’s own destiny and finding love along the way.

Vanessa Yu never wanted to see people’s fortunes—or misfortunes—in tea leaves.

Ever since she can remember, Vanessa Yu has been able to see people’s fortunes at the bottom of their teacups. To avoid blurting out their fortunes, she converts to coffee, but somehow fortunes escape and find a way to complicate her life and the ones of those around her. To add to this plight, her romance life is so nonexistent that her parents enlist the services of a matchmaking expert from Shanghai.

The day before her matchmaking appointment, Vanessa accidentally sees her own fate: death by traffic accident. She decides that she can’t truly live until she can find a way to get rid of her uncanny abilities. When her eccentric aunt, Evelyn, shows up with a tempting offer to whisk her away, Vanessa says au revoir to America and bonjour to Paris. While working at Evelyn’s tea stall at a Parisian antique market, Vanessa performs some matchmaking of her own, attempting to help reconnect her aunt with a lost love. As she learns more about herself and the root of her gifts, she realizes one thing to be true: knowing one’s destiny isn’t a curse, but being unable to change it is.

Hello book nerds! Today is my stop for the #VanessaYuTour hosted by Shealea at Caffeine Book Tours. I’ll be reviewing Vanessa Yu’s Magical Paris Tea Shop and sharing a mood board! I’ll also be including a few quotes from the book! This book was so adorable, so scroll down now to see me ramble!

Roselle Lim’s Vanessa Yu’s Magical Paris Tea Shop is both atmospheric and romantic, meant to make you fall in love with Paris and realize you can change your destiny.

My thoughts on Vanessa Yu’s Magical Paris Tea Shop

First thing I want to say is that this book is incredibly atmospheric! The author took me as a reader to different settings and really made me believe as if I’m right there with the characters. From an elaborate wedding in Palo Alto, to the wonderful museums in Paris, to the quaint Parisian shops Vanessa visits in the book, it was all so lovely!

Another thing that adds to the atmosphere of the book is the graphic descriptions of the food! When I read the book, I remember pausing for several times because the food was just mouthwatering.

When it comes to the writing itself, it was light and elegant. It has clever and beautiful prose and I couldn’t help but love it!

I loved reading about the characters, especially Aunt Evelyn! I do have to say though, while Vanessa was a likable main character, I felt like her characterization lacked. It’s why I liked Aunt Evelyn better. As for the minor characters, I loved how they brought something new to the book and made the story complete.

As for the romance, oh, it was romantic indeed. There’s just something about Paris that’s so magical and the author showed that in the book quite perfectly. Several relationships blossom throughout the story, including Vanessa’s. That said, I wanted to see more of Vanessa and [redacted]’s relationship. Unfortunately, I didn’t believe their chemistry enough to truly root for them.

The plot took a while to take off, but I can’t deny that it was really interesting. I was especially invested in Vanessa’s fortune-telling ability and the conflict it brings to her life. I also found it amusing how every prophecy comes with a flavor, a food.

Family, career, and love were also a constant theme throughout the book, as well as destiny. I loved that in a way, Vanessa finally found herself and what she was really meant to be.

Overall, Vanessa Yu’s Magical Paris Tea Shop was an entertaining and lovely read. I’m sure this book will make others fall in love!

About the Author

Roselle Lim was born in the Philippines and immigrated to Canada as a child. She lived in north Scarborough in a diverse, Asian neighbourhood.

She found her love of writing by listening to her lola (paternal grandmother’s) stories about Filipino folktales. Growing up in a household where Chinese superstition mingled with Filipino Catholicism, she devoured books about mythology, which shaped the fantasies in her novels.

An artist by nature, she considers writing as “painting with words.”
